At Floor Coverings International of Charleston we know how much creativity matters, and how important it is for a house to truly feel like a home. That’s why we bring you interviews with bloggers who love interior design, decor, and DIY projects.

Feel free to be inspired by DIY and home renovation blogger Amy Fedele of Pretty Purple Door!

charleston amy fedelePlease tell us a little about yourself.

I’m Amy and I run the blog PrettyPurpleDoor.com. I went to school for Mass Communications & Media Technology and I also run a web & graphic design company BullzeyeDesign.com.  I live in “the pizza capital of the world” with my boyfriend, dog Roxy, and cat Quincy.

Why did you decide to start a blog? What do you enjoy about blogging?

I actually started PrettyPurpleDoor.com as a Christmas gift for my dad. I purchased my house in December and for an entire year I documented all the projects and took photos when he wasn’t paying attention.  Around Christmas I sent him the link and he loved being able to look back on all the projects we did. Since we both liked it so much I just kept writing. The best part about blogging is helping others with similar projects, and seeing their results. When I hear that someone used my information or advice and it was helpful to them it really makes my day. A lot of my audience e-mails me directly for design advice, and the “community” aspect being my copper penny floor posts is so great to watch. Everyone helps each other so much I rarely get a word in before someone else answers the question! It’s really great to see.

How would you describe your interior design and DIY style?

I used to have a modern-eclectic style, but lately I’ve been going a bit more rustic – experimenting with some farmhouse and industrial elements, and always eclectic unique styles.
My DIY style is just to solve problems. I am a firm believer that learning how to do a small DIY project can really improve your quality of life. That drippy faucet that you spend several minutes every day trying to turn off? Yeah… if you just learn to fix it you will save those minutes and get to enjoy your cup of coffee instead of running out the door.

Where do you find your inspiration?

I find it everywhere. And I’m a creative person by nature. A lot of times I will see something in a store or in a blog post and it will spark an idea. I keep a notebook with me all the time with little sketches so I don’t forget.

Tell us about a recent project you’re proud of.

My most recent project was creating a new mixed wood top for my kitchen island. It came out great and really changed the look of my kitchen for a fraction of the cost. You can read about it on my blog.

Is there anything else you’d like to share?

I recently opened an Etsy store called Cecil and Lynn where my boyfriend and I are creating a lot of unique and salvaged home items. A lot of the posts from my blog are turning into items that I’m selling on Etsy. It’s a great creative outlet for me (as if I don’t have enough!!). But in all seriousness I love creating and designing and it’s been really fun sharing my work with others.
