Red Oak vs. White Oak

There are two common varieties of oak to choose from: red oak and white oak. They both rank highly on the Janka hardness scale, with white oak coming in at 1360 and red oak at 1290. Both are great hardwood choices for busy homes with heavy foot traffic, but white oak will add just an extra touch of durability to your home. Both varieties can slightly expand and contract under temperature fluctuations, but should remain strong for a lifetime is regularly maintained.

Sustainability

A majority of the oak hardwood flooring on the market comes from North American oak trees. They are among the most populous trees and are constantly being replanted after harvest. As a domestically sourced product, it’s a much more eco-friendly option for homeowners in Charleston and the Lowcountry.

White oak has a golden honey color, while red oak is evocative of light brown tinged with rose gold. The grain patterning of white oak tends to be tight and linear without many swirls or knots. Red oak typically is a bit more irregular, with winding lines and dark circular knots throughout the grain. Despite their names, red oak is typically lighter in color than white oak.

Each variety of oak looks great when stained and finished with a darker color. Oak hardwood easily accepts stain, but be sure not to oversaturate it as it can look too dark or uneven.

Oak looks fantastic for both partial and whole home installation. We particularly love oak in areas like the living room, entryway, kitchen and dining room. It’s also great for stairwells and hallways—the options are endless!
